Any CD that begins with the words "Pretty Sarah" automatically gets four stars in my book.
Fortunately, this positive assessment is backed up with original innovative music. The highly
anticipated "Soul Divining" from local favorites WaterWords was well worth the wait.
Hearing this for the first time, you'd never guess that this is their debut disc. Each of the ten
tracks is strong, confident, and fully realized. To single out one or two of the songs would only be a
disservice to the others. They all shine independently and together, they raise the stakes for local musicians.
All four members of WaterWorks are veterans of the regional music scene and their experience is evident.
Dan Clemens, bassist extrodinaire (check out "Suspicious" -- simply brilliant bassline) and drummer
Powell Randolph create a tight, groovy rhythm section that flawlessly blends in vocalist David Waltrip
and guitarist Mark Dunn. Forget the average 4/4 beat and gloomy lyrics that the alternative scene has
degenerated into. WaterWorks is already displaying signs of timelessness that most bands don't
ever achieve.
The final words on "Soul Divining" are "let me see you smile." That request will be simple after hearing
this solid debut from WaterWorks!
