From Detroit, the city that spawned such luminaries as MC5, Iggy Pop and Ted Nugent, comes a new
generation of alternative rockers who are effectively putting the Motor City back on the music map. Sponge
is one of a handful of bands helping to blaze this comeback trail.
"Rotting Pinata", Sponge's debut release, was partly inspired by Dr. Jack Kevorkian (yes, that Dr.
Kevorkian). Indeed, the songs on the album, all written during a time of business and personal lows, weave
a dark and brooding web of tormented emotion.
Sponge's sound, fueled by the explosive twin guitars of Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola, takes the
listener on a tumultuous journey through the angst-filled mind of lead singer Vinnie (no last name please).
Despite the frantic pace of songs like the hard driving "neenah Menasha" and the intense title track, Rotting
Pinata's heavy-hitting sound is filled with lush melodies. For all the desperation in the lyrics, the
music is decidedly upbeat and perfectly hummable.
A mighty impressive debut from an obviously hard working and highly motivated band. I expect we'll
be hearing a lot more from Sponge.
