Souls at Zero, consisting of Brad Divens, vocals and bass; Terry Carter, guitar; Jay Abbene, guitar; and
Jamie Miller, percussion, have turned out a solid, tuneful CD, but one in which the songs seem to blend
into one another. Nothing really stands out. The songs are about exposing your inner fears, delving to where
the demons in your heart are and finding perverse comfort inside that hell.
I do like their choice of cover art. How appropriate to have a shiny red apple, (need I explain further?) on a
CD titled "A Taste for the Perverse."
Divens sure can write some soulful lyrics; indeed, he wrote all the songs on this CD. Here's a
sample from "Taken Apart"
"now i think i can hear you"
"no i won't answer"
"everything i hide from"
"is now growing nearer"
"the plastic that surrounds me"
"and the fire that has sparked"
"will consume me alive"
"all the way down to the spine."
All in all, I liked it. While the songs seemed to run together, they had a distinct and tight sound. I hope to
hear more from them in the future.
