Still riding high on the success of their 1993 release "Ring" and an even more successful tour
of the southern United States, The Connells offer their ever hungry fans a new morsel to chew on.
"New Boy", a six-song EP is sort of a tour souvenir for fans of the North Carolina-based band. It
also serves as an excellent introduction for those cave dwellers in the world who have not been
exposed to the Connells' infectious brand of pop rock.
The title track, which originally appeared on "Ring", is a perfect example of the smooth harmonies
and beautiful melodies that have come to be identified with the Connells. Doug McMillan is very
adept at taking a song whose lyrics are filled with biting cynicism and making it sound like a tender love song.
For an EP, which usually does not have enough music to suite me, "New Boy" is filled with
several surprises. Those fans not able to attend a concert are treated to live acoustic versions of
"New Boy" and "Fun and Games." Recorded live during a live radio broadcast on WNNX in
Atlanta, both songs showcase the band's ability to get intimate with an audience.
Mike Connell's introspective songwriting comes to light again in two new songs also. "Logan
Street" and "Wonder Why" should co-exist nicely with such favorites as "Stone Cold Yesterday" and
"Slackjawed."
The highlight of the EP will likely be a cover of the Jethro Tull classic, "Living in the Past." The
Connells have made this a staple of recent live shows and it's nice that fans can now take it home with them.
"New Boy" should certainly whet out appetites while serving as a bridge between "Ring" and
whatever greatness lies ahead.
