Movie soundtracks are usually awkward, at best. Often, they consist of a dozen diverse bands,
haphazardly thrown together forming a CD that's only digestible as a whole if you're
schizophrenic. "Clerks" is a fine example of that very situation.
This has the potential to be a fairly good listen, provided that you can program the stereo
to skip certain tracks (all by Love Among Freaks, Seaweed, and Golden Smog). What
remains are strong tracks by Bash and Pop, Supernova, and The Jesus Lizard.
"Can't Even Tell" by Soul Asylum is the first single. In typical Dave Pirner fashion, it is lyrically
witty, instantly hummable, short and sweet.
The absent of late Alice in Chains contribute an oldie but goodie, "Got Me Wrong" (from "Sap"). Lead
warbler Layne Stayley duets with one of the Wilson sisters from Heart (the planet sized one,
I think). An enjoyable four minutes? Sure, but new material would have been better.
Also, don't be fooled. Five of the twenty listed tracks are nothing more than brief samples
of the movie's dialogue (let's do the math, folks. One fourth isn't even music). A straight, uninterrupted
listen contains far too many highs and lows for the average person. Save yourself the
emotional upheavals, cut out half of it, and it will than be worth the $12.99.
